Ten Below Zero by Whitney Barbetti

unnamed-1Book description:

“In here,” he said, pushing on the skin above my heart, “you’re ten below zero. And you’re closer to death than I am.”

My name is Parker. My body is marked with scars from an attack I don’t remember. I don’t want to remember. I choose to live my life by observation, not through experience. While people are laughing and kissing and connecting, I’m in the corner. Watching them live. I’m indifferent to everything, everyone. The only emotion I feel with any kind of depth is annoyance, and I feel it often.

A text message sent to the wrong number proves to be my undoing.

His name is Everett, but I call him rude. He’s pushy, he’s arrogant, he crowds my personal space, and worst of all: he makes me feel.

He chooses to wear all black, all the time, as if he’s waiting to attend a funeral. Probably because he is.

Everett is dying. And he’s spending his final days living, truly living. In doing so, he’s forcing me to feel, to heal. To come face to face with the demons I suppressed in my memory.

He hurts me, he fulfills me, he completes me. And still, he’s dying.

Giselle’s Review:

How dare you Whitney?! How dare you rip my soul and heart into little tiny pieces and then give me back the pieces with what felt like a casual shrug and a muttered “Oh…sorry.”

I don’t even know where to start. I suck at jotting my thoughts down when I have a major book hangover, but I’ll try my best!

Ten Below Zero by the amazingly talented Whitney Barbetti was PHENOMENAL. It is on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL OF AMAZING.

First, I must point out that I actually used tissues!!! I cried! Yes, strange that I’m excited about this, but this is pretty monumental because I’m pretty sure I’ve only used tissues because of a book one or two other times.

Ten Below Zero is one heavy read. It deals with several serious and dark subjects. So if you’re in the mood for a light, sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns read, I suggest saving this one for another time. Preferably for a time when you are in the mood for a harsh, gritty, real novel about life, death, struggle, and so much more.

“Some of us have scars that aren’t meant to be seen.”

Ten Below Zero is also a romance but the romance in this book is on a whole other freaking level. The relationship between Everett and Parker shouldn’t even be described as a ‘romance’ cause that word doesn’t even justify the relationship between the two of them. They had such a unique relationship, friendship, hell I don’t even know what to call it. All you really need to know is that it was real and perfect.

Whitney Barbetti truly shows her amazing talent with this novel. Her writing just grabs you and makes you feel. It makes you feel every. little. thing. She created some incredibly memorable, dynamic, unique, dark characters that will stay with me for a very, very long time if not forever. I just can not get over how amazing the writing in this novel was. Seriously. Everything flowed and worked so freaking well!

I refuse to spoil this novel for anyone so just know that the plot was OUTSTANDING, different, captivating, fantastic, amazing…okay, I think you get it.

The characters were just-god damn, so perfect. They made me feel everything!! I cried with them, I laughed with them, and I got angry with them. I had an intense love/hate relationship with Everett cause yeah, he’s a rude asshole! But I still loved the crap out of him cause if he wasn’t a rude asshole he wouldn’t be Everett. He was very far from perfect, as was Parker, and that’s probably the main reason I loved them both. Their sarcasm and witty banter was also just A+++ perfect.

Profound, deep, meaningful. All words that describe Ten Below Zero. This book is raw and it does not hold back. Everett, especially, doesn’t hold back anything. He calls it like it is and his insight and honesty were just some of the things I loved about him as well.

“But guess what, Parker? You are hiding in plain sight. I see you. I see the parts you don’t want anyone to see.”

Okay, well since I love lists, I have a list of advice for those of you that will be reading TBZ.

My advice before starting Ten Below Zero:

1) Have the tissues within arm’s distance because you will not want to move from your spot once you start TBZ and tissues are a must, especially during the last half.

2) Be prepared to have this novel on your mind non-stop.

3) Get ready to fall in love with some dark and complicated characters.

4) Get ready to experience a love/hate relationship with one or both the main characters.

5) Get ready to have you heart burst into pieces.

6) Have some Advil in hand as you approach the ending for that book hangover you are guaranteed to receive.

Ten Below Zero is a MUST, MUST FREAKING READ. This book will change you and have you experiencing emotions you might not have even known you could have experienced! It will make you feel everything and will have you wanting more from Whitney Barbetti. This novel left with a book hangover that I don’t think will ever leave and I will never forget these characters.
